DV to Film Techniques

Right now I'm in the process of creating a new tutorial that's all about improving your DV footage. I'm going to cover how to be sure you are staying at maximum quality throughout your workflow, and several tips and techniques on how to add some style to make your shot look more cinematic. This will go over everything from basic color correction to adding in-camera lens effects, such as realistic gradients, filters, etc...

Here's a sneak peak of what's to come, although I don't have it all planned out yet. Notice how much more cinematic the second image is compared to the first one.

Original Image from the DVX100B
Even by just cropping the image to a 2.40:1 aspect ratio, we are already adding some punch that wasn't there before. Add only three of the many techniques discussed in the tutorial to that, and we've got a professional-looking image.

Stay tuned for this tutorial, it's a good one!

Wow, that looks really good! Looking forward to it! Any word on Sin City? I'm doing a remake type film and I can't find any other tutorials.

The second Sin City tutorial should be up within a few days, and this tutorial should be up within a week or so.

That looks awesome!

what did you do as far as color correction in the second photo to make it seem more like film?

There's actually very little color correction going on here; this tutorial is all about adding in-camera effects, not necessarily color correction. It should be finished within a few days, so you'll just have to watch it to find out exactly what I did to the shot!

Grant,

I just watched your Creative Cow DV Cimena tutorial and was completely blown away by it! It was exactly what I was looking for.

I'm literally a beginner/hobbyist in AE looking to get a more cinematic/polished feel for a self-produced scene I shot for my acting reel. I got the basic editing done in Premiere, but was interested in trying out AE for some color correction and maybe intro titles.

Since AE is such a broad program, most tut's I found were very specific in scope (like your Writing on the Wall tut), or were TOO simple about basic comp setup, etc. Nothing to help me from start to finish with a simple project without going through hours of tut's/help files to answer a few simple questions.

Your Cinema DV tutorial does a great job of explaining general principles and showing specific techniques that give a great overview of the process. Even an AE newbie like myself could grasp what was going on in as you were flying thru some of those settings! For someone more experienced, it shows some cool tricks that I'm sure someone could experiment with to reflect their own style or the style of the project.

Great work! I can't wait to apply what I've learned to my footage. The acting might not be to great, but it should look awesome! LOL!

Sorry if I am missing something, but... is there a tutorial for this post anywhere? Would love to see how you got the color to the cinema look from the DV footage.

Thanks!
